Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith's request to dismiss the charges against Trump was expected after he won the presidential election.

Special counsel Jack Smith filed a motion on Monday to drop all four felony charges against President-elect Donald Trump related to his effort to contest his 2020 presidential election loss to President Biden and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S Capitol. Trump was indicted in August 2023.
