The highly-anticipated Wicked film is already bringing in big numbers at the box office following its opening weekend, and is celebrating the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway musical.

Universal's Thanksgiving pic opened to an estimated $114 million over the Nov. 22-24 weekend, more than three times the previous domestic record-holder, 'Into the Woods.'

As with any adaptation, there are a few changes from the original — indeed, the play was based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which itself was inspired by L. Frank Baum‘s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation.
